As many of you know, the head honcho at DPS and Bongiovi Acoustics is Tony Bongiovi. Tony has had many gold records and worked with many artists including, The Talking Heads and The Ramones to name a few. he would work with an artist or label and make a record. Those records all did very well. New ways to release music were happening then. There was the cassette and vinyl. 8 track and reel tapes. People bought music like this over the years. Then the CD happened and people were still into the cassette. People were copying stuff for their friends onto tape from their new alien format, the CD! Here we are again with a new format some years later. The MP3. Seems it has done more than made a headache of a few people copying music for their friends. It has started a downloading revolution. When the CD started costing close to 20 dollars many people jumped ship. I was fairly internet and tech savvy at the time. I still to this day buy my top artists albums in vinyl and or CD formats. This is the state of the new record biz. Well, for now anyway. Until the powers that be decide on a new alien format to become popular. Indie artists unite!

So the new iPhone 4g is upon us. Seems everywhere I look it is there. Like a gnome of some kind. A phone gnome! I have not yet jumped on the bandwagon. Though I cannot help but notice some key new features that look amazing. The forward facing camera is really a very cool feature. great for business and making fun videos for YouTube or whatever. The Retina Display has four times the pixel density of a typical LCD display at 326 pixels per inch! Crazy! I am teased by these upgrades alone. As soon as they open up to some new phone service providers I am there. The only real downside for me is AT&T. Not a fan. Plans are very pricey. Once they open up a bit I am sure I will join in on the iPhone 4g craziness. Though by then I am sure there will be something better. Time will tell. What are your thoughts on the new iPhone and AT&T?

I never thought much about what music I would be making or listening to 20 years in the future. I never thought about it at all until now. We all start somewhere. As soon as we can crawl we are listening to educational ABC songs or cartoon theme songs. Before you know it you are in your elementary school listening to whatever pop idol is current for the moment. I was fortunate enough to experience the tail end of the alternative revolution in the 90′s which very much shaped me as a musician. This time brought me Rock and Electronic genres. Most of this music has stayed with me now. I had a brief 2 or 3 year punk rock phase in high school and only a few of those artists are still in my listening routine. Most of us grow and change. We are exposed to things and we either take the bait or pass and stick to our loyalist guns. I believe that 30 years of listening to music makes me an expert of what I like. Ha! I believe I am still growing into music. As a listener and an artist. Music is amazing in the way that it comes along for the ride. Isn’t it? What’s your ride been like?

More and more I am seeing people get clever with their packaging for their movie and audio projects. Most people are streaming and or downloading now. While that is something I also have a hand in, I still look for something new. A piece of vinyl is nostalgia. Nothing beats something with a creative touch. The new Smashing Pumpkins EP “Teargarden by Kaleidyscope vol. 1 Song for a Sailor” is coming out in a silk screened wooden box. Each box contains a Cd, A 7 inch piece of vinyl with an unreleased song, and a hand carved leopard stone obelisk. This is unique and cool. On top of all that the Smashing Pumpkins are also giving away the digital downloads for free. No strings attached. The Smashing Pumpkins is a band with a following that is no longer on a record label joining the likes of Nine Inch Nails and Radiohead. All of these bands have revolutionized the way music is being distributed. Another trend is happening in the movie realm. Film makers are taking their own approach. Getting together some investor cash and releasing their movie projects on their own. Offering downloads from various sites and using a very D.I.Y mentality to get some notice via Facebook, Myspace and other social networks. Making each physical DVD or Blu-Ray package something unique and hand made. Look around online. It is a revolution of new ways to distribute media. Sort through the fluff and find the diamonds in the rough. Totally worth it.

What is it to be a DJ in 2010? It must be a very different time. There are many definitions of what a DJ is from state to state and town to town. Seattle might have more of an indie dance focus while Miami is very Latin and hip hop. Detroit might spin vinyl while Chicago mixes iPods together. No matter what people like to hear a good beat. A vocal that sticks in your mind. People love to dance. Whether it be in a club or letting Pandora do the work. The DPS Insider invites DJ’s to share their personal tricks and tools of the trade here with the DPS Forum community. How is being a DJ in 2010 different for you? How does technology change the way people view a DJ? The community would love to hear a DJ’s perspective. The DPS Insider will be featuring more content focused on the DJ realm. Stay plugged in.

So many people don’t even thing about what goes into a movie or TV show. The filming is labor intensive. Building sets and getting the lighting just right. I could go on for days with details. The director and crew work with the actors day in and day out and when all is said and done maybe some editing and production effects go down. After all of this craziness of the film world, there is music. Music that enhances the scenes for a particular feel. I love that edge of your seat feeling when someone is about to jump out from behind a wall or something is about to explode. So many people feel that music in the traditional sense has lost some if it’s excitement. Maybe this is the result of the way the music industry has handled the way we used to get our music? I feel that now more than ever, we need music to create and enhance these amazing visual realms we call Movies, TV Shows and Commercials. Everything we do or watch seems to have some kind of soundtrack. Why put music in one box? Some of the best bands I have ever heard I found jamming in the credits of a movie I just watched or a thirty second commercial for that matter. I believe music has a permanent future in these places. Seems to make more sense than a piece of plastic in a plastic case. Aside from the business world of music. We all can write the soundtrack to our day. Go outside and breathe a bit. I am sure a good day will bring an upbeat melody that we all could appreciate and enjoy. A stressful day might be a little more tense in the melody department. Music is still relevant and always will be. Business or no business. One of my projects, D_composure did a little song called, “A Touch From You” for an iHome commercial and for the DPS Plug-In. It was a lot of fun to write. A good example of a work inspired by something in the visual realm. Check it out at http://dpsplugin.com. Just hit play. We would love to hear and see your visually inspired works. Share your stuff with us on the DPS Insider Forum today!
