Actually a lot of the profiles are actually the same. In our quest to help our users feel comfortable with experimenting with different profiles we decided to move to City Profiles. Since we have been in a bit of a holding pattern due to iTunes 10.4 the Cities have been slow to arrive to Mac. Here is what we will see in the next iTunes DPS Plug-In release:

Universal 1 = Miami Speakers
Universal 2 = London Speakers
Universal 3 = New York Speakers
Universal 4 = Paris Speakers
Universal 5 = Los Angeles
Universal 6 = Amsterdam Speakers

Universal Headphones 1 = Miami Headphones
Universal Headphones 2 = London Headphones
Universal Headphones 3 = New York Headphones
Universal Headphones 4 = Atlanta Headphones

You can see some of these overlap with the iOS version (as HIFI profiles) and Windows.

Just stumbled across this thread and noticed that the Mac profiles seem to be completely different from the ones offered in Windows. Is that in fact true? The Windows profiles don't even have names like Universal 1, 2 etc. but maybe they're present under different names from the Mac ones.

Hi Joey,

While I originally bought the DPS plug in for my Macbook I am now using it with my main hi fi which I sometimes feed wirelessly with an Airport Express and an optical cable. I find especially at lower volumes the plug in improves things considerably. The speakers are high quality compact monitors (Sonus Faber Guarneris) but they lack something in the lower end. Which profile would you recommend? Is the Universal 6 aimed at this type of speaker? I currently use the AR AW880 profile.

BTW have you thought of selling a version of the DPS plugin which allows users to create their own profiles?

Thanks,

Andrew K

Thx for your quick response!

Now I tried Universal 1, 3 and 6. In my opinion the perfect sound for my device would be a mix of all three.
Let me explain:
Universal 1: Clear, with enough bass and trebles but too loud and aggressive, too much middles
Universal 3: Comes near to my favorite, sounds powerful, smooth, less middles, but I noticed a little distortion in the sound.
Universal 6: No distortion, but no power, weak bass, too less trebles, doesn't bring out the best of my speakers ;-)

I hope this information will be helpful...

btw: Universal 5 sounds quite good on my device ;)

Thank you very much!

120 watts RMS is a lot of power for such small speakers! I suggest giving Universal 6 a try (available as a download in Preferences window). Keep in mind we tune (create a profile) for all devices by hand/ear. Give several of the profiles a listen and let us know what you think sounds the best. If adjustments need to be made (less bass, too loud etc.) let me know and I can get you a profile based on your feedback.

Hi, I purchased for my iMac very good sounding speakers (Teufel Concept B 200)

Take a look on the website --> http://www.teufel.de/en/pc-speakers/concept-b200usb.html

Now I'm not sure what Universal Profile works best for the device... Or is it possible to get a special profile for this device?

Any suggestions??? :o)

Thank you very much!!!

Excellent questions!

Universal 5 is perfect for the Polk speakers you are using as it was intended for speakers of that type.

I suggest trying the Logitech Z profile or Universal 6 for your Creative Labs speakers.

And yes, the HD570 should be a close match for your earbuds.

Our research has shown a very large overlap in the application of any given profile. Just like you were able to hear that Universal 5 was best for your Polk speakers we encourage our users to use their ears and experiment. You know you have chosen the perfect profile when your speakers (or headphones) "light up" with great sound! Our new profile system that debuts with the Windows version will reflect this new thinking.

Hi! Just purchased the 3-pack plug-in the other day, and have a few questions if you have a few minutes.

I am using Universal 5 for my Yamaha receiver & Polk RTi10 speakers connected to my Mac Mini with Apple Lossless. It sounds very good! Is the Universal 5 profile your recommendation? Polk is not making the RTi10 any longer, but the RTi line is still active. Are you developing profiles for Polk speakers?

I have Creative GigaWorks T20 PC multimedia speakers attached to my iMac, and am using the Universal 3 profile. Again, the sound improvement is impressive! Is there an alternate custom profile that I should try?

My preference in earphones and earbuds is Sennheiser. My headphones are HD595 & HD650. Is the HD570 profile suitable for them?

What is the new Universal 6 profile intended for?

Thanks very much!

I also just made a profile specifically for the MDR 7506's that may work even better for your headphones! Also, if your headphones are not too bright already, the Dr. Dre Beats profiles is a great alternative for many brands that we don't have custom profiles for as of yet.

I would say Universal Headphones #4 should do the trick as I used MDR 7506's to create the profile. If there is anything about that profile that could be improved (lack of bass, too spicy in the highs) for your model of headphones then let me know! I can make it available to download through the plugin.

Here is a guide to get started with the Universal Profiles for the DPS Plug-In:
Keep in mind this is only a guideline! The Universal Profiles are meant to be tinkered with. Try them ALL on your system to see what YOU like the best. The easiest way to do this is to open the preferences (gear) window next to the DPS interface. Play a song and load a new Universal profile in the preferences window. Repeat until you find one you like!

External Speakers
1 = Clock radio (a very aggressive profile!)
2 = Computer speakers w/subwoofer (a great optimization for a $20 speaker set)
3 = Computer Speakers w/tweeter no sub (great for small desktop speakers with no subwoofer)
4 = Small flat screen tv (optimized for TVs with automatic volume control. Try #1 for larger TVs)
5 = Large home stereo (or boombox!)

Headphones
1 = earbuds (any headphones that go in your ear)
2 = closed ear (headphones that totally cover your ear)
3 = open ear (headphones that only partially cover your ear)
4 = high quality headphones (such as the Sony-MDR 7506)

Not quite satisfied? Reply to this topic with the audio hardware you are using, the Universal Profile that sounds the best, and what you think would sound better (more bass, louder, softer, more green etc). We are happy to work with you to get the most out of your audio hardware.
