Hank,

The issue lies in the digital dock connection for iOS devices. For some reason Apple does not allow us to process this signal. We can process the analog dock (line out) signal but not the digital one used with most automotive iPod connections. What you are hearing is the unprocessed signal. If you connect an 1/8" cable to your AUX IN jack for your radio you will hear the difference when changing "Headphone" profiles.

This is a fairly specific issue but I wonder if it's limited to just one brand or if it's widespread.

I picked up a JVC ipod-ready head unit for my car last week. When I plug in my ipod via USB, I'm able to get DPS to turn on/off but I can't change profiles. I've gone through the different profiles (dock, headphone, airplay, etc.) in case it was a simple glitch but no matter which profile/city I select, I still hear the same sound profile coming through the unit.

I've connected my ipod to the dock on my clock radio and can change profiles without incident.

So I'm wondering if it's just a problem with how the JVC interacts with programs via the ipod or if others who control their ipod via their stereo also have the same issue.

Two things I haven't tried that just hit me:
1) Running DPS via my unit's bluetooth audio, which should work just fine but...
2) Seeing if it makes a difference if I change the control from the head unit to the ipod itself. Maybe it's an issue with the Music app interfering with DPS.

Just throwing it out there in case anyone else has had this problem. Thanks!
