OK, finally figured it out. This link is more straight forward: http://www.myspace.com/bongioviacousticsmusic/music/songs/dps-interview-w4cy-radio-nov-8-2011-85240662

It was a very good interview. I learned a lot about Bongiovi. As a bonus, there's another song by Ozzie. :-)

I remember recording Clarence at Avalon in 2001. Marcia Barrett of Boney M brought him in to play on one of her solo tunes. Wow! I think he had to duck his head to come through the door and when he played…well, everybody knows what that was like. I used a 421 on his horn and held on for dear life! A wonderful man...

Here is Tony's reply to your post:

Richard,

You will be pleased to know that the iP1's Digital Power Station technology was tuned in an environment very similar to the ideal you have discovered. This was in a control room at Power Station Studios that I designed. All of the Power Station control rooms are the exact same dimensions and use a slotted absorber technology that is very effective in controlling both low and high frequencies. The ceilings are made up of a low absorption coefficient material and the floors are hard wood. The reverberation time of these rooms is less than 250ms which emulates a standard living room in which music will be listened to.

It was an excellent observation on your part that the low frequency component was better with the iP1 on the bench grinder stand. This is due to the fact that the grinder stand has a greater mass than the iP1. During the final calibration of the iP1, we placed it on the recording console in the same position as the studio monitors we used as a reference. This combination exhibits the same acoustic/mechanical characteristics as your bench grinder stand. An isolation plate may also improve this effect by mechanically de-coupling the iP1 from the stand and further decreasing possible resonance.

This same resonance is why the low-mass wood coffee table is not a good choice as the vibrations generated by the iP1's speakers are mechanically coupled to the surface of the table. The table absorbs this vibrational energy, converts it into heat and causes some low frequency cancellation.

Your observation of better low frequencies away from the wall is also sound. Low frequencies are omni-directionally radiated and will reflect off of wall, floor and ceiling surfaces. This changes the low frequency response of the iP1. This effect intensifies as you approach a surface and is sometimes referred to in acoustics as "corner effect". In fact, some speakers have been designed to take advantage of this.

Here is a link to the history of the studio: http://www.avatarstudios.net/aboutus/history.html

If you have any other questions in regards to the Digital Power Station or the recording studio please don't hesitate to ask.

Sincerely,

Tony Bongiovi

After waiting a while for my IP1 to be delivered I was looking forward to seeing just what it was able to do. And after receiving it and living with it for just 2 weeks now I am astounded how good it can sound. The instruction manual said "place on a stable surface", but made no mention of positioning in the listening environment. So much experimentation took place.
My usual listening room measures 5m x 8m with a 2.5m ceiling, hard floor and a mixture of hard and soft furnishings with a minimum of parallel reflective surfaces. Experimentation with positioning showed a marked low end hump with the IP1 anywhere near the rear wall and moving away from the wall in 0.25m increments allowed a more natural bottom end with the ideal being effectively open field i.e. equidistant from the rear and side walls.
As to the "stable surface", once again I experimented with a selection of stand configuration, from coffee table to high end isolation equipment stand but the best by far proved to be the cheapest. A bench grinder stand! Basically a 75mm x 900mm steel tube with a 350mm x 250mm cast iron top plate and splayed 380mm cast bottom plate. The basic design weighed in at 20kg but adding sand ballast to the tune of an extra 15kg really firmed up the low end.
I intend to try isolation plates on top of the stand in the near future and will post my findings.
I spent a few years working for a company in England making studio monitoring speakers for the BBC and having access to some VERY hi end equipment in their listening room the nearest comparison I can make is to my IP1 is the LS3/5a, for the clarity of mid and high range but with a more serious bottom end leaning in the direction of a pair of Rogers AB1 teamed with the LS3/5a's.
In short, I am seriously impressed with the IP1!!
