Jim,

The Smart Recorder is exactly how I would recommend doing it in your situation. I'm looking into a simple method for folks who don't have such features with their sound cards. I'll post it soon.

Hi Joey:

This is very interesting. Are you going to post how the Windows version will work? I have the current top end Sound Blaster X-Fi sound card with the 5.25" front panel. I actually have experimented with this by running everything through DPS and using the Creative Smart Recorder utility. It seems to work fine. Sadly, though, I've never been able to solve the Windows 7 audio drop out problem which I've determined has nothing to do with DPS. I have a more than 2 year old netbook running Windows XP and audio performs flawlessly on it. I can download files from the Internet or cause other heavy system loads on XP and I never get an audio drop out. I was using it to listen to music through iTunes but, since I got my iPhone 4S a few months ago, I've been using it instead. DPS for iOS is truly awesome!

I explained how to do this in another thread but I figure it should be it's own topic (Mac instructions):

1) Download and install Sound Flower: http://cycling74.com/products/soundflower/
2) Download and install Audacity 1.3 (the beta works fine): http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/beta_mac
Install the LAME mp3 encoder as well so you may save your files as mp3.
3) Set Sound Flower to be your default output device in Sound Preferences.
4) Launch Audacity and set the input device to be Sound Flower and the Output device to be the Built-In speakers.
5) Click the microphone icon in Audacity to begin monitoring. Audio is now routed from all applications --> to Sound Flower --> to Audacity --> then to your speakers.
6) Launch iTunes. Play some music to be sure your routing is working. You should see the red meters in Audacity moving.
6) Use the DPS iTunes plugin to choose a profile you want to apply to your audio. Be sure it sounds good on the devices you will be using. There are a few City profiles available that are great for spoken word on all devices.
7) Click record in Audacity then play the track you want to process in iTunes. The output of iTunes (including the DPS process) will be recorded into Audacity.
8) Normalize the volume of your recording in Audacity if necessary. DPS adds dynamic range to the audio signal so the resulting file may be a little quieter than the original.
9) Save your newly processed file and add it to your iTunes library.

Done!

This process must happen in real time so there really aren't any batch processing options here. However, this can be great for mastering a recording, an interview or a podcast you produced or anything else.

This can be done with the Windows version as well with certain sound cards.

Let me know if I should make a video tutorial of this.

Can you provide a little information about your system? You can email me directly at support@bmtdps.com if you want...

This is probably due to the Default Playback driver being set incorrectly. Here is what you can do:

Keep in mind the DPS Plug-In is only compatible with WIndows 7 and XP

Windows 7 instructions:
1) Open the Start Menu and click Control Panel
2) Click Hardware and Sound
3) Click Manage Audio Devices under the Sound category
4a) If you are trying to get DPS to work then Digital Power Station must be set as the Default Device. Select it then click Set Default at the bottom of the Sound Settings Window.
4b) If you are trying to restore your computer to prior functionality after un-installing DPS then choose your normal output driver (Realtek, Sigma Tel, Line out, headphones out etc) then click Set Default at the bottom of the Sound Settings Window.

In Windows 7 these changes go into effect immediately and you should hear sound right away.

Windows XP instructions:
1) Click on Start Menu
2) Go to Settings then choose Control Panel
3) Select Sounds and Audio Devices
4) Click the Audio tab
5a) If you are trying to get DPS to work then Digital Power Station must be set as the Default Device. Select it in the Default Device drop down menu.
5b) If you are trying to restore your computer to prior functionality after un-installing DPS then choose your normal output driver (Realtek, Sigma Tel, Line out, headphones out etc) in the Default Device drop down menu.
6) Click OK.

In Windows XP you must close any media playback programs and reopen them after making these changes.

After installing DPS and restarting, it said that DPS has encountered a problem and needs to close. I tried to open it again, and the same thing happens. I tried playing music in iTunes, and nothing will play anymore. It just stays stuck on 0:00. I tried playing something in Windows Media Player, too, and anything I tried was still stuck on 0:00. I opened up Pandora in Firefox, that is stuck on 0:00 too! What is going on with my computer now?! I tried uninstalling it and restarting my computer, and it is still doing the same thing!

I am currently testing the Windows Beta Program and I have been since it started. It's looking great so far and I've said it before and I'll say it again, I think customized profiles that user can change themselves would be great, as well as profiles that emphasize a specific brand or model of laptop (HP, Dell, Alienware, etc) I think, would be a lot more user friendly than the "Cites" profiles out now. I have a Compaq (owned by HP) Presario CQ62, and it's annoying sometimes whenever I upgrade to the new update, that I have to almost always mix and match the profiles to get the sound I need. Even after I find that one profile works great for some songs (movies, programs etc) but for others it stinks.

With all the stuff with toyota and for windows, things seem to be looking up for DPS. I love it on my JVC KD-S100, and got to thinking, is anymore aftermarket products going to feature DPS? even as an add on? Because I think now that it's bigger and people see the potential on their computers and home audio, that bringing back to aftermarket could work better. All my friends love it and a few tried to buy the KD-S100 after seeing mine but they are extremely rare now.

Even though we have a minute or two to make silly videos on our phones, we have been very hard at work bringing the latest versions of the DPS Plug-In online. During our testing we have been using the Full System Audio versions to watch Comedy Central online, play PC and Mac games with enhanced audio and of course listen to music and watch movies. We have also been developing a brand new profile system so getting great sound is more simple than ever.

We can't wait for you to hear it!

Joe

That's awesome to hear - it really helped me out. Could really differentiate the voices from room tone, sfx and music, etc.

I think a lot of mixers should give it a try!

Joe, check with your dad... We got a letters from some well known Mastering Studios about how they were using the iP1 as a "real-world" listening platform when mastering different projects. Maybe we can share some of them here on the forum????

I'm sure lots of folks will we listening to the stereo mix through devices just like the iP1. A totally valid monitoring platform if you ask me! It is the "Studio Series" after all...

Hey, guys.

I'm doing something crazy here. The distributor is going to an HD cam tape master of the last film I directed; and for my 2.0 foldown (from the 5.1 mix) - I'm monitoring through the IP1!

I guarantee this is the first it's been used in that respect!

This thing has so many uses - and sounds so amazing :-)

Actually, custom profiles were only created for 2006-2008 vehicles in the list. However, you are welcome to try a profile for a similar vehicle. If the speakers are the same make and model then the results can be quite good. You will only know if you try. This should be pretty easy since I'm releasing all of the custom profiles today!
