Just in the last couple of days I've had two incidents with static at the end of the last track of an album. In other words, I played the entire album and got to the end of the last song, then there was like two bursts of static lasting 5-10 seconds.

Hi,

Thank you so much for the reply - I'm totally awed! Wonderful if you really could come up with an alternate Phoenix!

Your sense of volume leveling is correct! The Phoenix profile is very aggressive in compensating for high noise environments. In fact, all Cities profiles are geared toward maximizing the potental benefits of the DPS technology. Profile settings that compensate for high noise also have volume leveling features.

Not all devices require such extremes in dynamic processing. If you like the tonal characteristics of the Phoenix profile I can create a HIFI variation that is less extreme in it's volume leveling. However, all elements of the DPS algorithm work together to create the "sound" of any profile so there will be some tonal differences.

I'll try to make this variation available later this week at http://bongioviacoustics.com

Hi,

I recently got the DPS app for iPhone and I'm pretty much blown away... thanks guys!

Only one thing distracts me a bit: I sense some volume leveling I can't get rid of. I first noticed it on an Iron Maiden track (indeed...) with a lot of sharp loud-soft-loud transitions. It was a song I've known since '83 and I'm pretty sure the dynamics shouldn't sound like what I heard.

Generally speaking, I hear leveling when a piece has a lot of fast dynamic variation; progressive rock, certain metal genres and some of classical music being typical examples of where it happens. If there's a slower crescendo or a diminuendo, I don't usually notice anything. I use Koss Porta Pro headphones and tend to prefer the Phoenix preset in the app.

I know this is a minor issue, but I'd appreciate it if you could tell me whether it's the app or just me.

Cheers,
Marko / Finland

DPS still sits at the first song of a completed album and the song's artwork shows as my background picture before unlocking the phone. It only shows up this way when you look at the artwork rather than the detailed song list. To clarify, I do exit the DPS app beforehand, so it's not in the middle of playing a song. I tried the Apple music app and it doesn't sit at the beginning of the first song, nor does the artwork show up as my background picture before unlocking the phone.

OK, gave it a quick run through and everything seems fine. The reversal of the swipe works. Now, when you drag your finger to the left, it skips ahead to the next song and it skips back one song when you drag to the right. There's one anomaly I noticed in the previous release which I'll check for again. After an album has ended, DPS positions itself back at the beginning of the first song. It doesn't play, it just sits there. When I lock and unlock my iPhone, I get the album's artwork instead of my normal background picture. Not sure if it always worked this way, though. Perhaps someone else can comment.

Thanks for posting that. I hadn't thought about it that way before, but a simple example of how iOS works is when you drag your finger to switch application screens. When you drag to the left, you're actually moving to a screen which is to the right. I've been doing it for years and never thought about it, so I have to agree that the DPS app is doing it backwards.

Jim, I understand what you mean but you're comparing apples and oranges. The two examples you use aren't really analogous to movements applied in iOS, or the DPS app, because iOS itself is counter-intuitive compared to other previously-established physical applications.

For example, I agree that when you want to turn right in your car, you aim your steering wheel towards your destination. The problem is that while the rest of the world is a car, iOS functions more like the controls on a plane. Bringing down the joystick propels the plane up, not down. It doesn't make sense at first until you realize that it's part of a bigger mechanism and then it becomes much more understandable and acceptable.

The reason why right>left to go forward makes sense in iOS is because the screen is developed roughtly to be thought of as a large piece of paper laying flat on your desk. When you slide the paper in front of you, you're physically dragging it from one point to another; or, you could think of turning pages of a book whereby grabbing the right page and bringing it to the left progresses you forward.

So my point, similar to that of Joey's, is that iOS and its applications already operate in this "counter-intuitive" universe. Why shouldn't the app as well?

Swiping from left to right to go backwards is totally counter-intuitive to me. The gesture means go right in the same way that pressing a skip forward or backwards button on a remote control or a keyboard does. The right button means go forward and the left button means go backwards. The Apple music app doesn't even support swipe the way DPS does. I wasn't aware that it was a feature until I read this thread, think it's great, and vote for leaving it as is.

Interesting feedback about the swipe. I agree I am used to swiping right>left to go forward in the camera roll and other swiped pages. Obviously this is an easy fix but I would like to hear more feedback from other folks who have ios audio players (like Spotify) that incorporate swipe. Any opinions?

One "glitch" I see is that the swipe gestures for next/previous are counter-intuitive in the iOS world. I've been trained to swipe left>right when wanting to go "backwards" and in the app, it's the reverse.

I don't really understand what the definition of running apps is. Is there some way I can look at any that might be running? The interesting thing about the glitch is that I can listen to some stuff for hours and never get one, but there's a few albums where getting them is almost certain, like the David Cook one. Other than this one problem, everything else works really well.

After about 20 minutes of listening, I got the static glitch again. The album name is David Cook (by David Cook) and the song is Come Back To Me. This is not the first time I've had the static on this album, so there appears to be a pattern. I bought the album from iTunes and it's the usual 256kbps format. I repeated playing the song and it did not glitch the second time through.

Yay! This is a major update folks. The number of tweaks and back end optimizations are in the hundreds. The folks at Big Nerd Ranch have been amazing to work with and everyone's hard work has paid off! Here are some of the new items:

1) Improved compatibility with iTunes Match. While we are still not allowed access to the Apple Cloud, the songs you have Matched appear in your library clearly labeled as such. Remember, for DPS to be able to play a Matched song, it must be played by the Music app first. The Music app downloads the song to your device thus allowing DPS to play it.

2) Increased headroom to prevent distortion.

3) Optimized scrolling of long lists of music

4) Rotational improvements

5) Swipe gestures for Next/Previous/Play/Pause on main play screen

6) Lock screen now shows album art. Double tap home button to view Next/Previous/Play/Pause on lock screen.

and last but not least
7) DPS HEAR - This feature deserves its own thread of discussion but I'll give a quick explanation; DPS HEAR is designed to give a quality listening experience at volumes that are safer for you and your children's ears. You may turn on DPS HEAR in the settings page (gear icon) and it can also be locked via a number code. This feature is only available when you connect headphones to the 1/8" jack.

Go ahead and update and be sure to rate us in the App Store!

There are many iOS functions that allow an app to use the features of the iTunes music player and the associated functions you mentioned. However, we must intercept the audio in order to process it. This requires the creation of custom playlists and all kinds of other wizardry that must be custom coded to work the same way as the iTunes Music app. Thus, we are "locked out" so to speak from some of these functions.

I'll ask our programmers about sending the metadata though. That could be a possibility.

Hey Joey, thanks for the reply. Hmmm...How does this app differ from say the Pandora app, in that it does allow use of the transport control to skip forward? Additionally, the Pandora app also sends the metadata to the iDrive display, and the DPS app does not, though it would be really nice if it did. :-)

We are hoping submit to Apple next week. Of course you won't have to pay for the upgrade on your iPad (as long as it's the same iTunes account). Apple just makes you go through the confusing FREE paid upgrade process again. I have just seen a "restore purchase" icon on another app so this should be doable on ours. I don't think it will make it into this release but it is an excellent suggestion. I'll pass it along.

Hey SB, All iTunes app react that way. I had the same thing. Select Buy and it will tell you you already purchased it and download for free (as long as you have the same user )

Jumping up and down with excitement. Is there an estimated release date? Also one other thing can you guys implement a "restore previous purchase" button? I purchased the full version on my iPhone but my iPad wants me to pay again.
