Listening for crossover...

Listening up close to a tweeter, with something like a light baroque piano piece, the program material in the tweeter sounds distorted... maybe clipping? ((Just my old, naked ears, I haven't tried it with a signal generator and oscilloscope...)) But, backing away, it seems to blend well enough with the mids from the woofer, so I'm imagining that perhaps the crossover cutoff ramps must be fairly steep. Whatever it is, it seems to work well enough.

Once again, I have to say, from a few feet away...or across the room...it works for me.

So, IMO, you guys succeeded in creating a convenient, enjoyable dock at a fair price for casual listening...
Now even better with the new, lower pricing! at http://www.ihomeaudio.com/iP1C/

Thanks again, from an iP1C junkie!

A few observations about iP1 hiss and hum...

With no program material, and the volume at max, the 'B' models do -- on average -- seem to be a little quieter than the 'A' models. That could be due to the different shielding on the wires to the iPod/iPhone dock. Each iP1 example varies a bit from the next, so it could be due to cable routing and/or tolerances of individual parts, bias, whatever... just guessing.

At max volume, un-muted, and no audio input, the tweeters present some audible hiss, and the woofers hum. Of course, the DPS processing accentuates those, bringing some detail and nuance of hiss and hum to the foreground, LOL!

On mute, all of that goes silent. So if the muting is implemented in the preamp stage, then the power amps are indeed, very quiet! If you listen very closely, you can hear some "chop" crosstalk into the signal paths during volume slewing.

But, from across the room, it's all good! ;-) Most homes (never mind offices) aren't really that quiet.

PS, I set the iP1's on a heavy table in the middle of a very large room, with the back end of the woofer cans puffing out into space over the back edge of the table. The iP1's ducts are high, and that helps keep them off the surface too.

Woof, woof! Ferro's vs Neo's ;-) In a homegrown, side-by-side comparo of my iP1-A-A models, using my "naked ears" (no spectrum analyzers) and a variety of musical material playing out from iTunes on Windows (no signal generators) into a "Y" cable. Here's what I heard: My ferrite "heavyweight" iP1 sounds a little cleaner in the low end than the neodymium "lightweight" iP1's. I ran them with and without the DPS (B) engaged. The neo's seem to add a bit of color--just a hint of a boomy peak--somewhere in the low registers...more noticeable while listening to group with an upright bass, for example.

My simple hunch is that the massively-smaller magnets have left a bunch of extra airspace unoccupied inside the cans, and the larger volume drops the resonant freq. The woofer cans and ducted ports look identical from the outside...and I'm assuming only the magnets have changed (probably same coils and cones). Anyway, it's just a hunch. And I'm not complaining either. They all sound pretty good.

BTW, I think the "neo" super-magnets are great, and a "featherweight" dock is easier to lug around. No sweat! ;-)

@classmaker, there were no electronic changes. the main difference in weight was caused by a change to the woofer to neodymium from ferrite magnets. The neodymiums were significantly lighter. Discerning ears may notice a change to bass performance, but subjective listening tests were non-conclusive, so the original DSP profile was retained, unmodified. The change was made in concert with a change in production partner, which also gave iHome the opportunity to slightly modify the tweeter housing's construction to improve it, structurally.

"iP1-*B*-A" units found...

So, I found two presumably newer units with Service No. iP1-B-A (-B-A rather than -A-A). Picking up 10H0F0 for example, the front buttons feel different (shallower, lighter press). The circuit board looks different, but I haven't spotted the rev #'s yet peeking through the vents. Wondering... what differences to expect?

MORE #'s, LOL ! ;-)
Peeking through the vents underneath my "heavyweight" (17J9U1)
and one of my "lightweight" iP1-A-A's, the board legends show...
ip1-main_B7 board
2009-05-20 REV:B7
P/N 1008-0000640
There is a "V6.5.1" sticker on the Avnera signal processing chip on both.
So, I'm guessing the electronics are the same across the iP1-A-A units.

I was wondering about the differences between earlier and later iP1's. I'm curious! ;-) Mine are all Model iP1, Service No. iP1-A-A. One of mine (17J9U1) is much heavier than the others! (17H0U3, or 23H0U3, for example.) So how do we decode those numbers? What's different inside the woofer cans? (Magnets, frames, or deadening ballast?) I also noticed the heavier one also has slightly smaller, more tapered tweeter cans than the others, with a slight difference in the sculpting of the tweeter bezels. Were there engineering changes to the production units? What are the expected differences in acoustical performance? What about the DPS parameters...any differences?

Cheers, and
Curiously yours,
classmaker ;-)

BTW, The heavier iP1 also came with the big blue "features" sticker on the upper half of the faceplate. It looks kinda cool to me, so I've left it in place as a "badge" distinguishing my odd-duck iP1 (collector's item!). Maybe I should take a couple photos of it.

Here is Tony's reply to your post:

Richard,

You will be pleased to know that the iP1's Digital Power Station technology was tuned in an environment very similar to the ideal you have discovered. This was in a control room at Power Station Studios that I designed. All of the Power Station control rooms are the exact same dimensions and use a slotted absorber technology that is very effective in controlling both low and high frequencies. The ceilings are made up of a low absorption coefficient material and the floors are hard wood. The reverberation time of these rooms is less than 250ms which emulates a standard living room in which music will be listened to.

It was an excellent observation on your part that the low frequency component was better with the iP1 on the bench grinder stand. This is due to the fact that the grinder stand has a greater mass than the iP1. During the final calibration of the iP1, we placed it on the recording console in the same position as the studio monitors we used as a reference. This combination exhibits the same acoustic/mechanical characteristics as your bench grinder stand. An isolation plate may also improve this effect by mechanically de-coupling the iP1 from the stand and further decreasing possible resonance.

This same resonance is why the low-mass wood coffee table is not a good choice as the vibrations generated by the iP1's speakers are mechanically coupled to the surface of the table. The table absorbs this vibrational energy, converts it into heat and causes some low frequency cancellation.

Your observation of better low frequencies away from the wall is also sound. Low frequencies are omni-directionally radiated and will reflect off of wall, floor and ceiling surfaces. This changes the low frequency response of the iP1. This effect intensifies as you approach a surface and is sometimes referred to in acoustics as "corner effect". In fact, some speakers have been designed to take advantage of this.

Here is a link to the history of the studio: http://www.avatarstudios.net/aboutus/history.html

If you have any other questions in regards to the Digital Power Station or the recording studio please don't hesitate to ask.

Sincerely,

Tony Bongiovi

After waiting a while for my IP1 to be delivered I was looking forward to seeing just what it was able to do. And after receiving it and living with it for just 2 weeks now I am astounded how good it can sound. The instruction manual said "place on a stable surface", but made no mention of positioning in the listening environment. So much experimentation took place.
My usual listening room measures 5m x 8m with a 2.5m ceiling, hard floor and a mixture of hard and soft furnishings with a minimum of parallel reflective surfaces. Experimentation with positioning showed a marked low end hump with the IP1 anywhere near the rear wall and moving away from the wall in 0.25m increments allowed a more natural bottom end with the ideal being effectively open field i.e. equidistant from the rear and side walls.
As to the "stable surface", once again I experimented with a selection of stand configuration, from coffee table to high end isolation equipment stand but the best by far proved to be the cheapest. A bench grinder stand! Basically a 75mm x 900mm steel tube with a 350mm x 250mm cast iron top plate and splayed 380mm cast bottom plate. The basic design weighed in at 20kg but adding sand ballast to the tune of an extra 15kg really firmed up the low end.
I intend to try isolation plates on top of the stand in the near future and will post my findings.
I spent a few years working for a company in England making studio monitoring speakers for the BBC and having access to some VERY hi end equipment in their listening room the nearest comparison I can make is to my IP1 is the LS3/5a, for the clarity of mid and high range but with a more serious bottom end leaning in the direction of a pair of Rogers AB1 teamed with the LS3/5a's.
In short, I am seriously impressed with the IP1!!

Joe, check with your dad... We got a letters from some well known Mastering Studios about how they were using the iP1 as a "real-world" listening platform when mastering different projects. Maybe we can share some of them here on the forum????

I'm sure lots of folks will we listening to the stereo mix through devices just like the iP1. A totally valid monitoring platform if you ask me! It is the "Studio Series" after all...

Hey, guys.

I'm doing something crazy here. The distributor is going to an HD cam tape master of the last film I directed; and for my 2.0 foldown (from the 5.1 mix) - I'm monitoring through the IP1!

I guarantee this is the first it's been used in that respect!

This thing has so many uses - and sounds so amazing :-)
