The free beta is always unfinished work that is released for testing purposed only. It is not considered a stable release and is set to expire 30 days after it is built. We have had gaps between beta builds that are unavoidable due to development schedules however we must remember these builds are only for testing certain features.

Keep in mind, the Mac SW software will be a free upgrade to everyone who has paid for an iTunes Plug-In activation. The beta program will be over when the final version has been released.

Hope this helps!

Thanks. I thought 1.1.1.f4 was the current version. Not sure why I would have got an update message, though. It only happened once. I downloaded the "update" and checked the version, but didn't apply it when I saw it was older.

Did this happen while audio is playing? I believe this happens when the audio stream is corrupted while switching drivers quickly. This should not happen at all while there is no audio playing. Unfortunately this is another odd issue to track down and is usually avoided by switching outputs while audio is paused. Let me know if it is occurring at any other times.

You are testing a version that is not out yet. Hence, there is a feature in there that is looking for an update. Nothing is wrong here. It is seeing something different as an update. Just don't update and you will not downgrade. I am sure Joey will chime in on this. Just testing the update feature.

I've been running the latest DPS version 1.1.1.f4 for Windows since it came out a few days ago and commented on it in a separate thread. Today (May 10), I received a notice about a newer version in the DPS system tray icon. I downloaded it and discovered that it's a much older version going back to September, 2011 and its version number is 1.1.0. Something is obviously wrong here, so would appreciate it if someone would take a look at it.

For the first time ever, I just had a DPS crash with the dreaded Windows 7 message that DPS has stopped working. It happened when I switched from headphones to speakers. It works fine after a restart. Is there some way I could get some informaiton on the error if it happens again?

Thanks for testing, Jim. The Unicode change could have caused some issues when communicating with our server so we just wanted to be sure everything was working properly. A nice side benefit has been the nicely rounded buttons in the preferences screen. A much more Windows 7 look.

You can thank GoDaddy for the excellent download speeds lol!

OK, everything is fine with this release. I did activation/deactivation and fetched profiles. Of course, I can't test another language, so that's an outstanding item.

FYI: Your partners which host the download service are running at around 56kbps. I haven't seen "speeds" like that since I had a 56K modem.:-)

Do you have any suggestions as to how I can test foreign languages? I've never had the driver not found issue, so I may not be the best tester for this release. I only have a US language keyboard in Windows and there are no other installed languages. If someone reading this who has the foreign language/incompatible character set issue could test it, that would be great. I'll test it anyway and report back.

Ok, we made one more rather important change to DPS for Windows. We tracked down the DPS Driver Not Found issue for foreign users to be caused by incompatible character sets. This new version had been converted to Unicode and should eliminate this problem. Please give this version a thorough shakedown especially with Activation/Deactivation, fetching profiles and other network related functions. Here is the link:

Hi Rob:

Thanks for posting that. It's very informative. I'm sitting here listening to Norah's new album on my iPhone 4S and it sounds really good, even with DPS turned off. DPS still has an edge, though, but not as much as with regular iTunes music. On my Win 7 computer, DPS has a bigger edge than on the iPhone, but that's probably because my sound card (SB X-Fi Titanium) presumably has better DAC's than the iPhone does.

It's nice to see that Apple is dedicated to improving the quality of their music. I think they're on to something with Mastered for iTunes.

I bought the album and the first thing I noticed in iTunes was that the music is still good old 256kbps. Considering the hype about the new mastering, I expected to see something much better than that. As for the sound quality, Bongiovi has nothing to worry about. DPS still wins hands down, although I admit the album without DPS turned on isn't too bad.

Just got an announcement from Apple about Norah Jones' new album, which claims to be "Mastered for iTunes". Here's part of Apple's description of what it means: "The words "Mastered for iTunes" which now appear on some albums and songs in the iTunes Store mean that the content has been specially engineered for higher fidelity sound on your computer, stereo, and mobile devices to produce an incredibly rich listening experience. The superior audio and dynamic range result in music the way the artist and sound engineer intended. To earn the words "Mastered for iTunes" the content producers must begin with a high-resolution digitization of the original analog source, follow the Store-recommended best mastering practices we've developed and tested, and audition the results on Apple devices."

I'm a big Norah Jones fan so will likely buy this album unless I don't like it after listening to the preview. I'll report back here on how it sounds with and without DPS.

Hey Windows users!

We just finished up a point release for the DPS Plug-In for Windows. This is a bug fix release that should really help out with some of the first-run issues some of you may have experienced. Here are some of the details:

1) Fixed an issue where some audio output drivers would not pass audio on first run until clicked.
2) Added a new page to the installer prompting the user to quit all other audio programs before proceeding. This minimizes the chance for "DPS Driver Not Found" errors.
3) Updated the Help pages with new online help, contact links and shorter example music for a smaller installer size.
4) Added a new version update mechanism. If you test this build before it's official release you will see this in action. Basically DPS checks to see if the version you are using is different than what is currently available (currently 1.1.0 is available) and gives you a system tray notification if this is true. Clicking the notification delivers you to the download page.
5) Doubled the DPS off volume due to newer City profiles that need less headroom.

You may download the latest release candidate here: http://avalonrecords.com/Pub/DPS_Win_1.1.1f4.zip
If no one reports any problems then we will officially release this next week.

We are working on adding a few new features for version 1.2 (like DPS H.E.A.R.) as well as a fix for users who do not use English as their installed Windows language.

Hmmmm it is entirely possible. Try changing the backup time by an hour or two and keep an eye on it. It could be your backup program has full permissions and is able to take control of files even if they are in use by a running program. Or perhaps they have a service running that is interfering with DPS. If that is the culprit then I suggest scheduling your backups for when you are not normally at your computer.

The Windows version will work for 10 minutes then just quit (from the taskbar) and restart and you will get another 10 minutes.

I haven't used AirFoil on a PC but if I remember correctly on a Mac you must choose the application you want to hijack and send to the ATV. Try choosing Digital Power Station while it is running and set to output to your desktop speakers. This is a rather unusual setup so I'm not sure it will work as DPS is meant to work with any output device available in your sound settings.

Let me know how it goes!

Thanks Joey and sorry for my impatience. Problem is, now the Desktop version has expired. Is there a way to try this out? Should I just uninstall and re-install the plug-in or will it recognize that it has been previously installed and not reactivate?

BTW, I think I tried taht and only my sound card showed up in the prefs
