I am sure many of you have noticed we mostly talk about audio here. It has not been too often lately that we talk about new musician and people tools for the artist and music listener. While updating to the new iTunes 10 I realized there was so much more in this particular update. There was Apple Ping! A social network for people and artists to share what they are listening to. I highly suggest checking it out if you are already using iTunes. I have found iTunes to be rather mediocre since I began using it with my 2nd Generation iPod. Ping makes iTunes more of an experience instead of a place where MP3′s go to die. I hope the rest of iTunes users jump on this. If nothing else it will serve as a great place to follow musicians we love. Much like the way a lot of us use Twitter to follow celebrities. I like Ping much better to sort out the musicians from that mess. Here is my profile as an example-

http://c.itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZConnections.woa/wa/viewProfile?userId=182526387

It will ask you to choose iTunes as an application to check out my profile so make sure you have it installed along with your DPS Plug-in!

I have been reading a few blogs online that are all talking about Google launching a music division. Something that will rival the iTunes cloud service I had mentioned a few posts ago. I use Google products everyday. The Search Engine, Gmail and Blogger just to name a few. A slew of web tools. I guess it makes complete sense that they would try their hand in the music business. iTunes owns roughly about 30% of the market share. I am sure Amazon and Wal-Mart own a pretty large amount as well. My homepage in Firefox or Google chrome is always set to Google dot com. How convenient would it be to just log into my email and have a module I can download with right inside my Google account. Plus the music has all the streaming capabilities the supposed iTunes cloud service is going to feature. I would be sold. Especially if it were free or half the price of the iTunes model. Time will tell huh?

A lot of talk is generating about Apple quite possibly turning iTunes into a cloud subscription service. A recent study by the NPD group concludes that millions would pay for a cloud-based iTunes that would let the user listen to anything in the iTunes catalog. It is not clear on whether or not this will happen but many seem to think 10 dollars would be the monthly fee. Not bad considering the platform would be servicing Computer, Phone and Mobile device users. I for one think it could be a great service. Especially if they get some kind of cloud transfer device in the works that would allow the consumer to stream and broadcast content to our devices at home such as, TV and Radio. Much like the way Blu-Ray Players have Netflix and Pandora built in. Apple already has a huge music and Movie catalog. I do think Millions would jump on board if they were able to stream everything whenever and where ever they want for 10 dollars. I think Apple may have me on this one if it actually goes down. What about you?

As many of you know, the head honcho at DPS and Bongiovi Acoustics is Tony Bongiovi. Tony has had many gold records and worked with many artists including, The Talking Heads and The Ramones to name a few. he would work with an artist or label and make a record. Those records all did very well. New ways to release music were happening then. There was the cassette and vinyl. 8 track and reel tapes. People bought music like this over the years. Then the CD happened and people were still into the cassette. People were copying stuff for their friends onto tape from their new alien format, the CD! Here we are again with a new format some years later. The MP3. Seems it has done more than made a headache of a few people copying music for their friends. It has started a downloading revolution. When the CD started costing close to 20 dollars many people jumped ship. I was fairly internet and tech savvy at the time. I still to this day buy my top artists albums in vinyl and or CD formats. This is the state of the new record biz. Well, for now anyway. Until the powers that be decide on a new alien format to become popular. Indie artists unite!

I am noticing more and more that people are supporting their top 5 artists in a way that is reminiscent of the record store days of old. I actually found myself buying a digital single last week for the new Trent Reznor project featuring his wife, Mariqueen Maandig called, How To Destroy Angels. The single dropped and initially, the only way to buy it was Amazon. I snatched it up. It was the first time I ever bought music on Amazon and I will say that it was a good experience. I bought it because it was relevant to Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails first and foremost. I think he might be on to something here. The power is in our hands on how to release an album or a single. If it is only available in one place then people will buy it there or steal it somewhere else. This sort of compartmentalizes things a bit. I am proof that a real fan will buy it wherever it may be sold. This was a quick way to release a single. Anyone can release music online anywhere. I have always had the mindset that having stuff for sale in as many places as possible is the key. High visibility. It seems with only one place to go like Amazon to buy a track, there is no clutter. People don’t like a million ways to find one thing. They want one thing that is highly visible and easy to find. Trent seems to always be ahead with music and the way it is marketed and released. Maybe we have something to learn here?

Bongiovi Acoustics, developers of the patented Digital Power Station™ (DPS) audio enhancement technology announced that it has introduced a new DPS Plug-In for iTunes. Released initially for Mac OS X users, it dramatically enhances the sound of any Mac computer, as well as its connected speakers, headphones and other auxiliary accessories. Available now, the DPS Plug-In can be sampled for free and purchased for $29.99 at www.dpsplugin.com. It’s designed for Mac users of all levels from first time neophytes to dyed-in-the-wool techies who spend nearly every waking moment in front of their computer screens.

The company plans to release the DPS System Wide Plug-In for Windows users soon. This version will optimize audio from any source on the PC.

The DPS Plug-In improves the brightness and clarity of compressed audio files (mp3, AAC, etc.) while providing richer, deeper bass response. It analyzes the audio signal in real-time and optimizes it for play back through the user’s audio system. It also compensates for differences in volume between songs and enhances dialogue and sound effects for music, movies, television, streaming video and podcasts. If it’s coming through iTunes, it will be dramatically better.

DPS is a 100% active digital processing method that analyzes the incoming audio signal and remixes it in real time for optimized playback on a particular device. Instead of using complex audio controls, the DPS is operated via a user-friendly “profile” system. Each profile contains settings for over 120 calibration points that are custom tuned by Bongiovi Acoustics sound engineers for the intended playback device. Users can easily optimize their own system by selecting custom profiles from Bongiovi’s expanding catalog.

Whether listening to internal speakers on your own computer, your favorite headphones, or external speaker devices connected to your Mac, the DPS Plug-In will provide state-of-the-art digital audio technology. Bongiovi Acoustics Managing Director Ron Simmons said, “The launch of the DPS Plug-In is the next step in our mission to bring studio-quality sound to everyday consumer electronics. Millions of Mac owners can significantly upgrade their audio system with a simple download and now they can custom tune their audio to their own listening tastes using our innovative profile system. It’s all about empowering the customer. We have the unique ability to immediately respond to their requests via our DPS user forums and create new tuning profiles.”

According to Bongiovi Acoustics’ Phil Fuller, VP Engineering/ Technology “We have unique control over the entire frequency spectrum of the program material which means that we can create specific custom profiles that give users freedom of choice to deliver studio-quality sound to their particular playback device, whether it is a MacBook Pro 17″, iMac G5, Apple ear buds or your desktop speakers. We have different profiles for various types of headphones and home entertainment systems. We are all about maximizing the user’s listening experience, regardless of what the playback device is or what its limitations are.”
